Another option is to place a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. If there is a leak, color will appear in the bowl within 30 minutes. This indicates your flapper needs to be replaced.
There may also be a kink in the flapper chain. To rectify this, thread a short piece of plastic straw through the flapper chain; it then can’t turn back on itself.
